Last Tuesday, President Obama — during the State of the Union address — spoke to the nation about our dangerous national debt and his commitment to bringing it down. For the sake our country, these cannot be more empty promises.
Unfortunately, instead of offering a plan to cut spending or reduce the size of our federal government, the President recommitted to spending even more money we don’t have on so-called investments.
We all know the massive expansion of government over the past two years has not produced the economic rebound the White House promised. It has, however, left us with a record federal budget deficit and national debt.
If elected officials will not exercise restraint to get our nation out of debt and our economy moving again, it is time to impose restraints on them.
That’s why on Wednesday I introduced a Balanced Budget Amendment in the U.S. Senate. This amendment prevents Washington from overspending and saddling this and future generations with more and more debt.
A constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget is a tremendous stepping stone down the right path to put our nation’s fiscal house in order.
Sincerely,
Orrin Hatch
P.S. As Mark Levin said during an interview with him this week to discuss my proposed amendment, “It’s more than a Balanced Budget Amendment, it’s a control the growth of government amendment.” Listen to the interview.
