An anthem for our day: Disturbed covers The Sound Of Silence

I enjoy a lot of diverse types of music. Until today, Disturbed wasn’t included in my list of “likes”. Sure, they have some catchy tunes and big beats, but I don’t like profanity and swearing. Then I heard something amazing from Disturbed‘s frontman, David Draiman, a cover of a song I’ve enjoyed for many, many years.

Music from Simon and Garfunkel are a bit before my day, but it’s generally “good” music, and I enjoy it despite the fact that I didn’t exactly grow up with it. One of my favorites is The Sound Of Silence.

Now Disturbed has covered the The Sound Of Silence and, in my opinion, it’s better than the original.

“When I cut the vocal, I had just finished tracking another song, and it was the end of my work day. I was exhausted, and I wasn’t expecting to have to sing anymore…” — Disturbed frontman David Draiman

The manner in which the lyrics are conveyed in this version make it much more pointed and specific to the troubles and events that surround us today, making those words more pointed and relevant. To me it sounds like an anthem for our day.

Political Correctness is The Sound of Silence

Here are some of the lyrics.

…a vision softly creeping, left its seeds while I was sleeping…
… in the naked light I saw, ten thousand people, maybe more,
People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening.
… no one dared to stir the sound of silence.

…And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they’d made…

“Fool”, said I, “you do not know! Silence, like a cancer, grows!
“Hear my words and I might teach you, take my arms then I might reach you.”
But my words, like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence.
