Microsoft’s Windows Vista was RTM today.
What was it supposed to be?
Back in the day, Vista was called “Longhorn” and was going to be the cats meow. It was going to be built on 4 “pillars,” core technologies that were the very foundation of the new OS.
- Windows Presentation Foundation (Avalon)
- Windows Communication Foundation (Indigo)
- Windows Workflow Foundation
- WinFS
One by one the pillars fell. All 4 have been dropped from the core of what was “Longhorn,” none making it into the final cut of Windows Vista.
When were we supposed to get Vista?
According to the video below, Longhorn (the codename for Windows Vista) was supposed to be in our hands in October… of 2003. It’s a little late.
But what was it supposed to look like?
The biggest draw for consumers was to be an animated, 3D-heavy GUI.
