Senator Hatch: Time for cuts

The White House and its liberal allies are living in denial about the extent of our debt crisis and the damage it is causing to our nation. Our federal budget, deficit and debt are at a tipping point, but there isn’t — yet — the will in Washington to do something about it.

We must reverse this course.

Unfortunately, liberals have been feverishly blocking any real meaningful effort to reduce federal spending beyond token cuts. In fact, their proposed $4.7 billion in cuts wouldn’t cover the federal deficit for even one day last month.1

I, for one, am not going to sit back and leave the burden of Washington’s overspending on future generations.

That’s why I’ve taken the lead on key efforts to correct our nation’s course:

  1. Cut The Deficit: I have opposed and continue will continue to oppose short-term spending bills that do not contain meaningful reductions in federal spending.
  2. Eliminate Wasteful Programs: I’m leading a bipartisan effort to create the Committee to Reduce Government Waste, which would be the only congressional committee solely tasked with eliminating wasteful federal government programs.

As Ronald Reagan famously quipped, “A government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth.”

The challenges we face in reforming the federal government are not easy to overcome, but our success is necessary to ensure continued prosperity for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come.

I appreciate your holding strong in a belief that we can get this done.

Sincerely,

Orrin Hatch
