Congress and the President have negotiated grand budget deals in the past. Each time, conservatives demand spending cuts to cut the deficit and liberals demand tax increases.
Almost as soon as the ink was dry on each and every one of these deals, spending shot back up and so too did our deficits.
Now, we’re facing a full-blown debt crisis, and the only way we’re going to grow our economy and get out of this fiscal hole is to make substantial cuts in federal spending. Unfortunately, even if we make the needed cuts, nothing can stop future Congresses from increasing spending and re-mortgaging our children and grandchildren’s futures.
If we want to make sure we never rack up this level of debt, we must pass a Balanced Budget Amendment to force Washington to live within its means.
A Balanced Budget Amendment would limit the size of the federal government, put big roadblocks in front of future tax and debt limit increases, and would require the President to propose and Congress to pass a balanced budget.
Our nation stands on the precipice of fiscal ruin, but we can reverse course by passing a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.
That’s why I’m leading the fight to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment, and why I will not vote for any increase in the debt limit unless Congress passes the amendment.
Sincerely,
Orrin Hatch
P.S. We cannot sustain the current spending binge; the time for action is now.
