Today Google has thrown down the proverbial gauntlet in the Battle for the Browser by releasing their own browser called “Chrome.”
The Chrome browser is (and will continue to be) entirely open source and uses Google’s WebKit and V8 technologies.
Upon install, OneCare (my firewall) reports this beta release as version 0.0.0.0 (see image). After permission is granted for this application to access the web, the user interface is very slim and clean. According to the press conference, the download is around 7MB (which includes 43 languages); their aim is to make it even smaller.
Google promises that they will continue contributing to other browsers (including Opera and Firefox)
The beta is publicly available at http://www.google.com/chrome
UPDATE: Apparently the Chrome EULA is pretty “evil” in nature. Read all about Google Chrome’s Evil EULA here.
