It’s simple. You want clean, safe, healthy food. Don’t Let Chinese Chicken End Up on Your Plate!
Over the last 5 years, Americans have agreed that our health and safety is more important than political games. Time after time, you’ve spoken loud and clear that given the poor track record of food coming from China, you don’t want chickenprocessed in China on your dinner table. There is a renewed push to allow Chinese chicken to come to the U.S. Can you take action to make sure this doesn’t happen?
Until last year, Congress had banned Chinese chicken imports. Unfortunately agriculture giants like Smithfield, Tyson and Cargill lobbied to lift the ban, and now the USDA is considering rules to allow poultry from China into the U.S.
These companies want to process poultry in China because costs are lower there (as are standards), and then they can import the chicken back here and sell it for a hefty profit. It might save the corporations money, but it’s no bargain for consumers.Take action to make sure that politics and corporate profits aren’t put before our health and safety.
In 2009, over 600 shipments of food from China were blocked from coming into the U.S., including fish, cookies, candy, crackers, juice, tea, canned and dried vegetables, and spices. The reasons for rejection weren’t reassuring: contamination with melamine or banned chemicals; pesticide residues and unsafe additives; and conditions inspectors described as “poisonous” and “filthy.”
With a track record like this, it’s not time to start letting in processed poultry from China. Take action to make sure the USDA keeps Chinese chicken off our plates: http://action.foodandwaterwatch.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=5601
Thanks for taking action,
