Weber.edu Online: Down during “Dead Week”
Online college courses can be a great thing. Many of them offer you the ability to put off turning in your assignments and taking your tests until the absolute last moment — you know, Dead Week, the week right before finals.
The appeal of online courses is strongest amongst working professionals who have a full-time job, a family, and are still trying to finish up that degree. You know the type, it’s easier to get online and turn in your assignments at 2am than to attend two or three classes in a class room.
Enter the firmware update to Weber State University’s WSU Online’s SAN. Apparently the firmware update caused a cascading data corruption and eventual failure. Students and faculty have been unable to login to the WSU Online portal since Saturday, April 21st 2007. The site is still inaccessible. There is no word as of yet whether or nor (or how much) data has been lost.
It wouldn’t be quiet as embarrassing if they hadn’t already experienced a week’s downtime when they installed the SAN just last year.
At the time of this writing Weber State University had not replied to requests for comment.
